How Solar Roofing Works

1. Solar Panel or Solar Shingle Absorption
  • Solar roofing systems use photovoltaic (PV) cells to capture sunlight.
  • These PV cells are made of semiconductor materials (like silicon) that generate electricity when exposed to sunlight.

2. Conversion of Sunlight to Electricity
  • When sunlight hits the PV cells, it creates direct current (DC) electricity.
  • Most homes and buildings use alternating current (AC) electricity, so an inverter is required to convert DC to AC.

3. Powering the Home
  • The AC electricity is used to power your home’s appliances, lighting, and other electrical devices.
  • If your solar roof generates more power than needed, it can be stored in a battery system (if installed) or sent back to the electrical grid.

4. Net Metering (If Connected to the Grid)
  • Many solar roofing systems are tied to the local power grid.
  • Excess electricity sent to the grid may earn credits on your electricity bill through a system called net metering.

5. Battery Storage (Optional)
  • Some homeowners install solar batteries (e.g., Tesla Powerwall) to store extra energy for nighttime use or power outages.
  • This increases energy independence and resilience.

Types of Solar Roofing
  • Solar Panels on Roofs: Traditional PV panels mounted on the existing roof.
  • Solar Shingles: Photovoltaic shingles that replace traditional roofing materials while generating electricity.
